Why We Visit Before We Recommend: Notes From a Team That Travels the Hard Way
Anyone can book a hotel from a photograph. Knowing whether it is right for you takes someone who has been there.

There is a simple rule at the heart of Sangini Holidays: we don’t recommend a place we haven’t seen for ourselves.
It sounds obvious. It isn’t how most of the travel industry works. Most itineraries are assembled from supplier catalogues, review scores and photographs taken on the one sunny day of the year. We chose to do it the slow way instead.
What “the hard way” looks like
It means travelling independently, often to places that are still off the tourist map. It means taking the local bus when there is one and walking when there isn’t. It means checking into the guesthouse as an ordinary guest, not as an agent on a familiarisation tour, and seeing what an ordinary guest sees.
And it means paying attention to the small things, because the small things are what make or break a trip:
- How long the transfer from the airport really takes, and whether the road is gentle on an elderly parent.
- Whether the “sea view” room looks at the sea or at the car park.
- Which café the owner sends their own friends to.
- How the place feels at night, in the rain, out of season.
None of these appear in a brochure. All of them matter when it is your holiday.
The test every place has to pass
Before anything reaches a client, it has to pass one question: would I send my own family here?
If the answer is anything other than an easy yes, it doesn’t make the list. Plenty of beautiful places fail that test: a hotel with wonderful rooms and indifferent service, a route that looks short on the map and takes all day. We would rather have a short list we believe in than a long one we don’t.
What you get from it
When you plan a journey with us, you are not choosing from a catalogue. You are talking to people who can tell you what the morning light is like from that terrace, which room to ask for, and when to skip the famous viewpoint for the quiet one ten minutes further on.
That knowledge can’t be downloaded. It can only be gathered, one trip at a time.
